6:30 PM - 8:30 PM    Boating (Marine) Navigation - Boating Navigation
The Marine Navigation is a course which covers the basics of coastal and inland navigation. This course focuses on navigation as it is done on recreational boats today and embraces GPS as a primary navigation tool while covering traditional techniques so the student will be able to find his/her way even if their GPS fails. OpenCPN, free software that runs on Windows, MAC and other systems, will be taught in the class to demonstrate to students how to use electronic charting software. OpenCPN is a marine navigation program that is state-of-the-art and in wide use by commercial and recreational boating enthusiasts. The course includes in-class exercises, developing the student's skills through hands-on practice and learning. Some of the topics covered will include: Charts; Navigation aids; Plotting courses; Converting between True and Magnetic; and Use of GPS, including interpreting GPS displays. Topics covered include: Charts and their interpretation Navigation aids and how they point to safe water Plotting courses and determining direction and distance The mariner’s compass and converting between True and Magnetic Use of GPS – typical GPS displays and information they provide, setting up waypoints and routes, staying on a GPS route. Pre-planning safe courses and entering them into the GPS Use of OpenCPN navigation software Monitoring progress and determining position by both GPS and traditional techniques such as bearings and dead reckoning The “Seaman’s Eye” – simple techniques for checking that one is on course.

Do you know which knots to use in every situation? Learn to securely attach your boat and other useful applications. Learn how to secure your boat to docks, piers, and other boats; handle rescue and repair situations; manage running rigging; anchor securely; and tow other vessels or people. This seminar has been designed to help you to know which lines and knots to use in each situation. You'll gain knowledge and hands-on experience selecting the appropriate line and tying the 10 most useful knots, bends, and hitches; and you'll learn how to care for the lines on your boat and on the dock.

The Marine Navigation is a course which covers the basics of coastal and inland navigation. This course focuses on navigation as it is done on recreational boats today and embraces GPS as a primary navigation tool while covering traditional techniques so the student will be able to find his/her way even if their GPS fails. OpenCPN, free software that runs on Windows, MAC and other systems, will be taught in the class to demonstrate to students how to use electronic charting software. OpenCPN is a marine navigation program that is state-of-the-art and in wide use by commercial and recreational boating enthusiasts. The course includes in-class exercises, developing the student's skills through hands-on practice and learning. Some of the topics covered will include: Charts; Navigation aids; Plotting courses; Converting between True and Magnetic; and Use of GPS, including interpreting GPS displays. Topics covered include: Charts and their interpretation Navigation aids and how they point to safe water Plotting courses and determining direction and distance The mariner’s compass and converting between True and Magnetic Use of GPS – typical GPS displays and information they provide, setting up waypoints and routes, staying on a GPS route. Pre-planning safe courses and entering them into the GPS Use of OpenCPN navigation software Monitoring progress and determining position by both GPS and traditional techniques such as bearings and dead reckoning The “Seaman’s Eye” – simple techniques for checking that one is on course.

With the Automated Identification System (AIS) for marine vessels, you can avoid collisions in crowded waters by knowing the name and locations of other boats and ships, how close they will come, and when to act. Many AIS systems also broadcast your boat’s information to other boats so they can also make better, safer boating decisions.Our AIS Electronics for Boaters seminar can help you decide if an Automatic Identification System is right for you and show you how AIS and Radar differ. AIS electronics are not just for commercial vessels and more recreational vessels are employing this technology for safer cruising.
