ELEMENTARY ARTIST CAMPS
Art and Nature Camp (June 10-June 14 and August 5-9; 9:00AM-11:00AM)
Ages: 5-12
Does your child enjoy nature? Exploring surroundings and collecting stones, shells, or butterflies? This camp will take us outside to observe plants, birds, and any natural treasures we can find. We will then incorporate them into our artwork. Feel free to bring in found objects to share in class. We will practice sketching and drawing techniques, but also collage and build 3D projects. Try something new and share ideas in a cohort of young artists in our art studio environment and direct instruction from an experienced artist and teacher.
Beginner Ceramics Camp (June 17-June 21; 9:00AM-11:00AM, July 1-5 (no class 7/4); 9:00AM-11:30AM and August 12-16; 9:00AM-11:00AM)
Ages: 5-12
Ceramics are clay pieces fired to a hard, durable "bisque," then "glazed" with a powdered glass paint which is fired again to create a hard, slick, waterproof, brilliantly-colored surface. Students will enjoy using a variety of clay colors and methods to create original pieces either as functional craft pieces coiled, rolled slab or hand-built into sculptures using additive and subtractive methods. When the pieces are ready to glaze, everyone loves picking from the many beautiful colors and textures of glazes to complete their work.
*The clay process takes two weeks, so it is recommended for students to sign up for two weeks of camp in order to complete their projects.
Drawing And Painting Camp (June 24-28, August 19-23; 9:00AM-11:00AM)
Ages: 5-12
Students with an interest in drawing and painting basics will learn various traditional methods of sketching, drawing, and rendering with an array of materials. They will review and explore basic painting techniques and color mixing. Work and styles by famous artists will be studied. Students will work toward trying new techniques and practicing with previously learned methods. Come join the fun during this summer combo camp! Rain or shine - we'll work outside on beautiful days!
Construction and Design Camp (July 15-July 19, 9:00AM-11:00AM)
Ages: 5-12
Students will use a variety of materials in creating original art in 2D and 3D. Options for collage/assemblage, wind sculptures, clay, paper mache, weaving, wood sculptures, or paper making. We will look at artwork by Louise Nevelson, Alexander Calder, Larry Fuente, and other prominent artists. Bring us your interesting reusable materials, nature objects, colorful tiles, and more. Start collecting now!
Contemporary Crafts Camp (July 29 -August 2, August 26-30; 9:00AM-11:00AM)
Ages: 5-12
These projects are always changing! So many new crafts are being invented. Try some new twists on some familiar crafts like tie-dying, fiber art, sewing, Culpey clay, marbling, paper art, and even edible art! Send your exciting new suggestions to Beth at chrysalisartcenter@gmail.com ahead of camp week so we can experiment here at the studio!
TEEN WORKSHOPS
Enameling Workshop (June 11-June 13, 12:30PM-3:30PM)
Enameling is done by fusing glass powder or pieces to something metal, the art is in the design, colors and various techniques. We will use copper and powders along with bits of spun glass and fuse it together in a small kiln. After it cools, students will polish the copper piece to give it a finished look. Students will have time to make several final pieces. Come try this ancient art form still used today.
Painting Workshop (June 18-June 20, August 6 -August 8, 12:30PM-3:30PM)
Compare different types of paints (acrylic, oil, watercolor, gouache) on different surfaces, experiment with innovative styles, share your own techniques and explore your preference for abstract vs. realistic subjects. Work on color mixing, layering, combining watercolor pencil and wet methods, drybrush, ink over for final details. Try pen air working outside on a landscape or springhouse study.
Printmaking Workshop (June 25-June 27, 12:30PM-3:30PM)
Why make just one picture when you can make many? Design a T-Shirt logo, card series, special prints for your friends and family. Learn how to silk screen, dry point, make several unique monoprints. I met an artist who made live fish prints and then set the fish free! Maybe you will find something that inspires you to make more than just one of something. I learned printmaking in high school and started my own business making team shirts!
Ceramics Workshop (July 1-July 3, 12:30PM-3:30PM)
Time to get creative with clay: maybe you would like to make a vase, a lifelike head, a sculpture of a dance, a mother holing a child, a decorative bowl, or a serving plate. So much in our homes are made of ceramics.

(please allow 2 weeks for the drying time, firing, glazing, re-firing processes)
Drawing Workshop (July 9-July 11, 12:30PM-3:30PM)
Love to draw with graphite, charcoal, colored pencil or pastels? Let’s experiment with all of these looking at faces, figures, animals and still life this summer. Work in a studio setting, surrounded by emerging artists’ work. We will all be at different levels of experience so be prepared to learn and be inspired by others. If you have a sketchbook bring it with you and remember why you love to draw!
Sculpture Workshop (July 16-July 18, 12:30PM-3:30PM)
Sculpture is creating 3-Dimensional artwork, large or small, soft or hard, abstract or representational. Remember the joy of handling play-doh, building a snow person, and turning a box into a fort? Students will use a variety of materials (wood, clay, wire, paper, plastic, etc.) to create several sculptures. They will have fun learning techniques of sculpture, developing textures and shadows, terms, tools and styles. If you like to build things, come sculpt with us. Rain or shine - we will work outside on beautiful days!
Jewelrymaking Workshop (July 30-August 1, 12:30PM-3:30PM)
Jewelry is one of the oldest art forms and is worth a trip to a museum to see how the ancient cultures made theirs! Join us for this relaxing and focused project- designing wearable art. We will explore basic beginner necklace, pendant, earrings, and bracelets using the wide variety of materials available today. You will learn how to use tools to make a metal wire spiral, loop, clamp and crimp. The more confident you become the better your designs will become and reflect your personal style. The colors, textures and choices keep you coming back to make more!
Students have the option to add Monday and Friday for $60 to any week EXCEPT the week of July 4 - students can add just Friday for $30 that week.
